PRX-300 Proximity Probe TesterAutomated DC linearity testing on the AT2040

Clamp the probe and press start. The PRX-300 moves a 4140 steel target through the probe's range while the AT2040 records every point, judges every 10 mil segment against API 670 limits and saves a PDF test report. No micrometer, no hand calculations, and the same result whoever runs the test.

Why automate the probe test

Every segment judged

API 670 limits apply to every incremental scale factor. The PRX-300 checks each 10 mil segment on its own, so a good average can't hide a bad one.

Repeatable

Segment ISF repeats within ±0.75 % (95 %) even with the probe taken out and re-seated, and the average ISF within ±0.17 %.

Paperwork done

Every test ends with PASS or FAIL and a PDF report with the data, charts and serial numbers, ready to file with the asset record.

How a test runs

The probe stays fixed in its holder. The PRX-300 moves the target to it and back while the AT2040 powers the driver and reads its output.

  1. HomeThe target goes to its home reference before every test.
  2. Find the probeThe target travels in and settles on the −1 V start point.
  3. SweepTen points 10 mil apart, each settled and averaged before it is read.
  4. JudgeEvery segment ISF, the average ISF and the DSL against your limits.
  5. Check and reportThe target returns home, checks for screw slip and saves the PDF report.

Try the Prox DC test

This is the Prox DC Linearity Test screen on the AT2040. Press Start Test, pick the acceptance criteria and watch the sweep.

  • Live DC voltage while the target moves
  • Each point plotted as it is read
  • Report, ISF plot, table and curve views
  • Switch to the bad probe: one segment out of tolerance fails the test, even with a good average

Where it's used

Commissioning

Prove the probe, extension cable and driver work as a set before the machine is handed over.

Incoming inspection

Check new or repaired transducer systems against their published ISF and DSL.

Recertification

Re-run the same test on the same limits and file the PDF report with the asset record.

PRX-300 or the PRX-100 kit?

Both test proximity probe systems against a 4140 target. The PRX-300 automates the linear (DC) test and the paperwork; the PRX-100 adds the dynamic test on the shaker. Many labs use both.

Questions

Which probes does the PRX-300 test?

Eddy-current proximity probes with bodies from 5 mm to 19 mm (3/16 to 3/4 in) diameter. The holder is an adjustable clamp, so any size in that range fits, not just a few fixed sizes.

What does it measure?

It steps the gap from 0 to 90 mil in 10 mil steps and records the driver output at each point. The AT2040 works out the incremental scale factor (ISF) of every 10 mil segment, the average ISF and the deviation from a straight line (DSL), and judges each one against your limits.

Why judge every segment and not just the average?

API 670 limits apply to every incremental scale factor. A probe can have a good average and still have one segment out of tolerance, and the PRX-300 reports that segment as a fail.

Which calibrator does it need?

The PRX-300 runs from the AT2040 portable vibration calibrator, which powers the probe driver, reads its output and controls the test from the touchscreen.

What target material is used?

AISI 4140 steel is supplied, the material most probe systems are calibrated for. Targets in 4340, 1018 / 1045, 410, 416, 17-4 PH, 304 / 316 and Inconel 718 are available, and the target material is recorded on the report.

What do I get at the end of a test?

A PASS or FAIL result and a PDF test report with the data, the charts and the probe, cable and driver serial numbers, plus a CSV of the raw data. Both can be exported to a USB drive.
